Edward J Nell Scholarship


Quill and Scroll was organized April 10, 1926, by a group of high school advisers for the purpose of encouraging and recognizing individual student achievement in journalism and scholastic publication. Since its founding, charters have been granted to more than 14,267 high schools in all 50 states and 44 foreign countries.

National winners in either the Yearbook Excellence Contest or the International Writing/Photography Contest are eligible to apply before May 10 for one of the Edward J. Nell Memorial Scholarships in Journalism. This scholarship is intended to pay $500 for 6-8 awards and $1,500 for two awards for tuition, room and board at any college or university that offers a major in journalism. The scholarship is awarded for the freshman year only and is paid in two installments (fall semester and spring semester).

To qualify for the Edward J Nell Scholarship you must:

  • Be a senior in high school

  • Plan to major in journalism

  • Be a winner in either the Quill and Scroll Yearbook Excellence Contest (deadline Nov 1) or the Writing, Photo Contest (deadline Feb 5, entry forms available online at http://www.uiowa.edu/~quill-sc).


If you are a winner in one of the two contests and a senior, an application is automatically sent to you. Completed applications are due May 10. If you were a past winner please email us your high school's name, the year you were a winner, and your home address, and an application will be sent to you.
