The Florence E. Dunn Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the late Florence E. Dunn — a Colby graduate (Class of 1892), a longtime professor of English, and for many years a trustee.

Dunn, who died in 1964, designated in her will that, following the death of her last surviving individual beneficiary, Colby would receive the remainder of her trust. She directed the College to establish a special scholarship fund, with first preference to Maine students who needed financial help to attend Colby.

When the trust came to the College it had grown to $1.6 million. That enables Colby to establish, in perpetuity, a full scholarship for a member of each class to be designated Dunn Scholars.

The George J. Mitchell Scholarship

The Mitchell Scholarships were established in 1994 by U.S. Senator George J. Mitchell. One of Senator Mitchell’s highest priorities is to expand and improve opportunities for the education of young people in Maine. The Mitchell Institute awards a scholarship to a graduating senior from every public high school in Maine.

The scholarship award is in the amount of up to $4,000 for students pursuing a four-year degree and $2,000 for students pursuing a two-year degree.

Grants from the Barking Foundation are available only to Maine residents. You may attend college anywhere, but you must have been a Maine resident for at least 4 years. You can be a full or part time student, and you can be in any phase of your education. The awards are based on scholarship, need and an essay. The scholarship amount is $3000, and you may receive it twice, but you must apply each time.
