The Scholarship Advantage

Some students assume that scholarships are primarily designed for students who are in dire need of financial assistance. This is not the case. In fact, winning a scholarship will be beneficial to any student for several years following their receipt of the award. If you are on the fence about applying for scholarships and unwilling to commit your time to the process, consider these significant benefits before you miss your opportunity:

Recognition. If you win a scholarship, you can give yourself a pat on the back. For some scholarships there are thousands of applicants. When you are recognized for your accomplishments it gives you the confidence to pursue other goals. It is very important for students to recognize their own potential early in their academic career so that they foster its growth—receiving recognition from an organization or company helps students take this step.

Distinguish your achievements. Receiving a merit based scholarship indicates that you stood out among your peers. The scholarship provider recognized this quality, and it is important that you know see it too. When you apply for colleges or jobs in the future, you have proof that in at least one area you can distinguish yourself from other peers. This knowledge will motivate you to challenge yourself to reach higher goals in your own life.

Provide you with financial support. Maybe you’re one of the lucky students who aren’t relying on financial aid to get through school—if so, it does not mean that you can’t benefit from a scholarship. Some scholarship offers send winners the reward directly. This is good news for students who don’t need financial aid to pay tuition, as the money can be used to pay for other expenses associated with college. Instead of spending your earnings from a part-time job on essentials like food and books, a scholarship lets you spend somebody else’s cash!

Help you get into a selective university. Universities prefer students who are distinguished and have been recognized for an accomplishment. Winning a scholarship is a big deal! Most colleges are looking to add students who will be positive contributors to their student body. A merit scholarship confirms that you are a capable student who would be a great addition to the school.

Make your resume stand out. Distinguishing your resume from those sent by hundreds of other applicants can be difficult. A scholarship can make it easy to make your resume stand out. Being recognized by someone else for your achievements is sometimes enough to get you in for an interview with a future employer. Looking for a job is hard work, but when you have plenty of achievements and qualifications it is much, much easier.
