The Advantages of Balancing Work & College

Earn Money

The most obvious advantage to working throughout college is the potential to begin earning money now. College students have incredible spending potential; in fact, most can and do get approved for credit cards with limits that are high when contrasted with their actual earning potential. Working part-time can help you avoid debt and learn how to manage a budget.

Build Skills

Even jobs that aren't preferred, like food service and sales, are valuable learning opportunities for students. Build your communication skills, learn marketing strategies, and observe how management operates.

Value Your Education

Most students are quick to realize that the jobs that are available to them without a degree are not jobs that they would like to turn into careers. Working during college, teaches you just how valuable your education is, and hopefully, encourages you to take your courses seriously.

Open Doors

Did you know that most students find jobs through pre-existing connections? This being the case, working while you are in school gives you the opportunity to network. In most service jobs, you are exposed to hundreds of people from a variety of backgrounds; a bright and articulate college student who is brimming with potential will be of interest to them.

Teach Self-Discipline

College schedules are demanding. The student who can balance work with a semester of rigorous classes and sleepless nights, is the student who has mastered self-discipline. The student who will benefit the most from working throughout college is the student who can manage his schedule effectively, make it to class, and arrive to work on time.

Add Depth to Your Resume

Just before you graduate, an intensive job hunt will begin. Many employers appreciate candidates who have worked while attending school. A work history gives insight into what you are capable of. Having a past employer as a reference on your resume will create a talking point for you during any interviews. Having experience to draw on provides you with information about your own skills and abilities that you can discuss during your interview.
