Woods Hole Undergraduate Fellowships for Minorities

Minority Fellowships are awarded to undergraduate students who have completed at least two semesters of undergraduate study at a U.S. college or university and are interested in the marine sciences, oceanographic engineering, or marine policy.

Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents in order to apply.

Under-represented groups included for consideration in this particular program include African-American or Black; Asian-American; Chicano, Mexican-American, Puerto Rican or other Hispanic; and Native American.

Fellowships are awarded to pursue an independent research project under the guidance of a member of the Research Staff at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution or the U.S. Geological Survey Center for Marine and Coastal Geology located in Woods Hole. These projects typically are suggested by the advisor, and agreed upon jointly by fellow and advisor. The Fellowships typically take place during the summer, but with prior arrangement can also take place during the academic year. Through this program of Minority Fellowship grants, WHOI’s aim is to give a promising group of science and engineering students experience that will assist them in determining whether they wish to devote careers to the study of the oceans. WHOI cannot offer formal academic credit toward degree requirements for participation in the Minority Fellowship Program; however, such credit has often been awarded by the student’s own college or university. The program has been very popular and, consequently, very competitive, with an average of about ten percent of the applicants receiving awards. This program is made possible through the generosity of friends of the Institution and with support from U.S.G.S.

Applications are welcome from students in science, engineering, policy, and related disciplines, including the fields of biology, chemistry, engineering, geology, geophysics, mathematics, meteorology, physics, oceanography, and marine policy.

I can only speak from [...]
