Elmendorf Officers' Spouses' Organization Scholarship

Elmendorf Officers' Spouses' Organization Scholarship Guideline:

Eligibility: Applicants must be a graduating high school senior, the son or daughter of an active duty or retired active duty military member and must live in the Anchorage area. The Anchorage area is considered to be from Wasilla to Girdwood. This includes the student whose parents are divorced. If the parent with whom the student lives with has married a military member, who in turn has not legally adopted the student yet provides support and has a military ID card, this student is also eligible. Rank is not a consideration.

Note:Each student must enclose a photostat copy of his/her current military ID card.

Selection Criteria: Selection of recipients is based upon scholarship, leadership and citizenship. Our goal is to choose students who are recognized as well-rounded individuals. Scholarship includes GPA, difficulty and variety of classes, as well as Honors and Advanced Placement classes. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA. The committee often chooses to combine the categories of leadership and citizenship. These two categories include all activities in and out of school, offices held, honors and awards, work experience, etc. Each committee member rates an applicant on a scale of 1 – 10 with 10 being the highest.

While need is not considered in the selection process, a recipient may not also accept a four-year full tuition scholarship or an appointment to a service academy. This will forfeit the scholarship and it will be awarded to a selected alternate.

Each recipient is responsible for providing the EOSO with the name and financial aid office address of his/her chosen college. Upon notification, the EOSO will mail a check directly the school of behalf of the student.

The scholarship may not carry over into another year. Any funds not used are forfeited and to be returned to the EOSO.

Deadline: All applications must be received by March 31st to be considered for selection. Please allow time for mailing applications to reach the EOSO by the deadline. Applications dropped off at the Susitna Club also need time to reach the EOSO by the deadline. The club’s staff is not responsible for application packets. Late submissions will not be accepted.

by Carly Gerber You may be thinking that the day you head off to college, you will be freed from listening to your parents’ opinions. Slow that ship before it hits the bridge: While it’s true you will become more independent at college, your parents (and their ideologies) still exist. For example, deciding the major you want to pursue is exciting but just as you have picked it, your [...]

by Mike Sheffey Large classes or small? As colleges look to save money per student, this has become a key discussion topic. Recent studies are now showing that redesigning the typical lecture-type lesson has proved successful in large class settings, boasting higher exam results than those on the old model...but I think it really depends on the institution.
