Washington State Association for Justice's American Justice Video Scholarship

As part of the Washington State Association for Justice’s (WSAJ) commitment to foster an awareness and understanding of the important role that the civil justice system plays in our society, WSAJ sponsors an annual statewide student video scholarship program. The video topic deals with advocacy in the American justice system and related topics. This year, WSAJ may award up to two (2) individual scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 each.

This scholarship is available to high school seniors who are residents of the state of Washington and who attend high school in Washington State. Students need not intend to attend a Washington college, but must start college within the next two years to receive the scholarship funds.

To submit an essay for this contest, the following guidelines must be strictly followed:
1. Create an original video that thoroughly addresses the following topic: "Free speech vs. hate speech. Where’s the line?"
2. Videos may be on any subject within the scope of the topic.
3. Videos must be one to three minutes in length and submitted in a high-resolution format. The student must submit three DVD copies with the video, which have a label with the video title.
4. The student’s name should not appear in the video itself (to permit blind judging), but the title must appear on the DVD label.
5. A separate cover sheet with the name, home address, telephone number, email address (if they have one), high school name, school address and the title of the video must be included.
6. Video must be your own original creation. No copyrighted music, video, logos or images may be used in the video, without written release submitted with the entry to WSAJ.
7. Video cannot infringe on any third party rights, including, but not limited, to privacy, publicity, tort or intellectual property rights.
8. You must obtain release forms for all of the people featured in your video. You must provide WSAJ these releases if requested.
9. Video cannot contain violent images, or material a reasonable person would find offensive.
10. The video must have a unique, original title and may not use the contest topic as the title.
11. The student must complete and enclose the attached form Application Checklist.
12. Videos that exceed three minutes, contain inaccurate or inappropriate messages, etc. will not be judged.

DEADLINE: March 15th (Applications must be postmarked on or before this date.)
Mail to: Susan West, WSAJ American Justice Video Scholarship, 1809 7th Ave. #1500, Seattle, WA 98101

WSAJ reserves the right to make your video available to the general public. By submitting a video, you grant WSAJ a royalty-free license to copy, distribute, modify, display and perform publicly and otherwise use, and authorize others to use, your video for any purpose. By submitting a video, you guarantee no other person, corporation or organization has a copyright interest in your video.

Scholarship awards will be made directly to the recipient’s chosen institution of higher learning, to be applied toward tuition, room, board, or fees. By accepting funds from the WSAJ Scholarship Program, the recipient agrees that WSAJ may use the recipient’s name and likeness in any and all media for the purpose of advertising and promoting the Scholarship Program without any limitation, further compensation, or notice to the recipient.
