AAAS Minority Science Writers Internship

Science and technology increasingly shape our world. New discoveries and inventions have exciting outcomes, but can also lead to unexpected consequences. Science writers have the opportunity to explain those discoveries, and what they mean, to the public. Even though science is a global activity, the demographics of the journalists who cover it don't reflect that diversity. AAAS offers the Minority Science Writers Internship for students who are interested in pursuing a career in science journalism.

The internship is open to any minority undergraduate with a serious interest in science writing. Preference will be given to those students pursuing a degree in journalism. You must be enrolled in an academic program at the time you submit your application.

The internship will take place in the summer at the Washington, D.C., headquarters of AAAS’s Science magazine, the largest interdisciplinary journal in the world. Interns will spend 10 weeks at Science under the guidance of award-winning reporters and editors, and have a chance to experience what science writers do for a living. Interns will be expected to contribute to the weekly news section, including the chance to write bylined articles for the print and electronic news service. The paid internship provides for travel to and from the internship site in Washington, D.C. Living accommodations and expenses are the responsibility of the intern.
